Justices of the Peace

Justices of the Peace (JPs) serve as the primary judicial authority for all landlord–tenant matters, including eviction (forcible detainer) cases. Property owners and managers must file an eviction in the JP court with jurisdiction over the property’s physical location—not the tenant’s residence or the management company’s office.

The Fort Worth Apartment Association (FWAA) represents members across nine North Texas counties, encompassing 32 individual JP courts. Understanding which JP court has jurisdiction is crucial for properly filing and avoiding costly delays.
